Lateral to Advanced
(Lessons 7-11)

The purpose of the videos is to provide visibility of what each stage is trying to achieve, and the Support is to help you and your horse get there.
The structure is designed to work in a logical sequentional manner, building on previous stages.

Lesson 7

  • Stepping the Quarters towards you.
  • Teaching a horse to step the hind quarters towards you.

A basic aid / tool trained at halt.

Helpful in braking down Quarters In (Travers) into a simple step for handler and horse.

A fantastic tool for a difficult horse at the mounting block.

Lesson 8

  • Shoulder In & Renvers.
  • Shoulder In, this is a great exercises following on from leg yield to help improve balance. The horse should be on three tracks flexing slightly away from travel.

This movement also mobilizes and frees the shoulders, which allows the handler/rider to place the forehand and engage the hind quarters.

Start of more collection.

  • Renvers (Quarters Out)

The quarters stay on the track while the forelegs shift to inside and the bend is opposite to Shoulder-In.

Great for suppleness and lightening the body especially the shoulders when a horse gets a little stuck/ solid in flexion.

Lesson 9

  • Quarters In, Travers
  • Teaching the horse to travel with its forehand straight on the track, and its hind quarters on an inner track (i.e. moving on four tracks).

This is a dressage and training movement to prepare you for Half Pass and Pirouettes.

This helps to improve lateral bending, over all suppleness and engagement behind.

Lesson 10

  • Half Pass
  • Teaching the horse to step forward and sideways, with an inside flexion.

This is a dressage movement where the horse should be gently wrapped round the rider’s inside leg. It moves forward and sideways with its forehand slightly ahead of its hind quarters.

More flexion and swing comes with time, training and strength.

Balance, rhythm and engagement is key.

Lesson 11

  • Walk Pirouettes.
  • Training the horse to step its quarters around on a small circle, while the forehand steps around on a slightly larger circle.

This is a dressage movement, shown at the Walk and Canter.

This is a big ask for a horse, as it has to sit and take weight back onto its hindquarters. This requires suppleness through its whole body.

Training correct collection, balance and strength towards the canter pirouettes.
